Kakuro is a number-logic puzzle on a crossword-style grid. Each horizontal and vertical run of white cells must sum to the clue shown in the adjacent black cell. No digit may repeat within a single run. Every puzzle has exactly one solution, always reachable by pure deduction.
What the online Kakuro puzzles include
Unlimited puzzles
The generator builds a new verified puzzle on demand at any difficulty. There is no fixed set of boards to exhaust.
Four difficulty levels
Easy through Ultra Hard. Start with short runs where moves are largely forced, then work up to dense grids that demand advanced technique.
Candidate overlay
Toggle a 3×3 mini-grid in each empty cell to track which digits are still valid without writing on paper.
Hint system
Stuck? Tap Hint to highlight the next cell with a forced move and see why that digit is the only valid option.
Combination reference
Every valid digit set for every sum–length pair is one click away. No mental enumeration mid-puzzle.

Easy Kakuro puzzles online
Short runs where many moves are forced from the start. Most cells can be resolved with a single combination lookup. The right starting point for anyone new to the puzzle. Easy Kakuro guide →
Medium Kakuro puzzles online
Longer runs with more intersecting constraints. Candidate tracking becomes genuinely useful here, and cross-run intersection logic starts to matter. Medium Kakuro guide →
Hard Kakuro puzzles online
Dense grids with heavy overlap between across and down runs. Forced moves are sparse — intersection and residual-sum reasoning are required throughout. Hard Kakuro guide →
Ultra Hard Kakuro puzzles online
Maximum grid density. Every constraint matters and even small missteps cascade. For experienced solvers who want a genuine challenge. Ultra Hard Kakuro guide →
How to play Kakuro online puzzles
Open freekakuro.com. A puzzle loads immediately — no waiting, no setup. The default difficulty is medium. To change it, open the controls before generating a new puzzle.
Reading the clues: Black cells contain sum clues split diagonally. The number in the upper-right triangle is the across-sum for the run going right. The number in the lower-left triangle is the down-sum for the run going down. Each white run must sum to its clue with no repeated digit.
Entering digits: Click or tap a white cell, then type 1–9 or use the on-screen pad. Red cells indicate a constraint violation. Correct placements stay neutral until the puzzle is complete.
Using candidates: Toggle the candidate overlay to show a 3×3 mini-grid in each empty cell. Click individual candidates to mark or remove them as you eliminate possibilities.
For a complete walkthrough, see the Kakuro how-to-play guide or the beginner guide. For combination lookups, use the combination reference.

New to Kakuro online puzzles?
Start with the rules page — it covers the grid layout, the two core rules (sum constraint and no-repeat), and the first deduction technique in five minutes.
Then open an easy puzzle. Short runs mean most cells have very few valid combinations, so forced moves appear quickly and the solving loop becomes intuitive fast.
The Kakuro for beginners guide walks through a complete approach: reading clues, the forced-combination technique, intersection logic, and residual-sum chains — everything you need to solve any easy or medium puzzle.
