How to start playing free Kakuro online

  1. 1 Open the game. Go to freekakuro.com. A medium-difficulty Kakuro puzzle loads immediately — no waiting screen, no tutorial gate.
  2. 2 Read the clues. Black cells with diagonal lines are clue cells. The number in the upper-right corner is the sum for the white run going right (across). The number in the lower-left corner is the sum for the white run going down.
  3. 3 Fill in digits. Click or tap a white cell, then enter a digit 1–9. A cell turns red if the digit violates a constraint. No digit may repeat within a single across or down run.
  4. 4 Use the free tools. Toggle candidate mode to track which digits are still possible per cell. Hit "Hint" to identify the next forced move. Open the combination reference to look up valid digit sets for any sum and run length.

New to the puzzle? The beginner's guide covers the core solving loop in detail, and the rules page explains the grid notation in under five minutes.

All four levels are free — no level-gating, no premium tiers.

Free easy Kakuro

Short runs with many forced moves from the start. Most cells resolve with a single combination lookup. The right starting point for new players. Easy Kakuro guide →

Free medium Kakuro

Longer runs and more intersecting constraints. Candidate tracking pays off here and cross-run logic starts to matter. Medium Kakuro guide →

Free hard Kakuro

Dense grids with sparse forced moves. Intersection logic and residual-sum reasoning are essential throughout. Hard Kakuro guide →

Free ultra hard Kakuro

Maximum grid density. Every constraint matters and mistakes cascade. For experienced solvers who want a serious challenge. Ultra Hard Kakuro guide →

Free solving tools

Candidate overlay: Toggle a 3×3 digit matrix inside each empty cell. Mark and unmark possibilities as you eliminate options — no paper, no pencil, no cost.

Hint system: Tap "Hint" to have the solver find the next cell with a forced move and explain why that digit must go there. Useful when you are stuck without giving away the whole solution.

Auto-play: Resolves all currently forced moves in a single step. Good for clearing obvious placements quickly so you can focus on the harder logic.

Kakuro helper calculator: Enter a target sum and run length to see every valid digit combination. Open the free helper →

Combination reference: Full static table of every sum × length pair. Faster than calculating in your head mid-solve. Open the free reference →

Technique library: Covers intersection logic, residual sums, naked pairs, and more — all free. Open free technique library →
